Hiroshima

Hiroshima Peace Park is an extensive memorial to victims of the first atomic bomb, detonated August 6, 1945.  When we visited (in December, 1998), I was struck by the irony that the U.S. was simultaneously dropping bombs on another country half a world away.  The Mayor of Hiroshima regularly sends letters protesting nuclear testing; the two most recent, dated the second week of December, were posted to Russia and the U.S.

The A-bomb Dome remains a stark reminder of the results of the atomic fireball.
Karen took pictures, too.
The Children's Peace Monument is
draped with thousands of origami paper cranes
as is the Statue of a Prayer for Peace.
